Katy Hamilton

Katy Hamilton – Editor

A senior commissioning editor and content developer with ten years of experience in professional, educational and trade publishing.

Overview

I have ten years of experience working in professional, academic and trade publishing, both in commissioning and content development roles. My most recent role was Senior Commissioning Editor for an independent trade publisher of business books where I helped authors to shape publishing proposals in the areas of data analytics, neuroscience for business, coaching, change management, and learning and development. Two of these titles were shortlisted for the 2017 CMI Management Book of the Year. I take great satisfaction in helping both new and experienced authors to turn ideas – even those in their earliest stages – into viable publishing opportunities.

I have worked across a variety of subjects from film, philosophy and history to economics, psychology and even soil mechanics! As a content developer, I have worked across all non-fiction subject areas in the humanities and social sciences, mostly at undergraduate and Masters level. I am skilled in providing authors with objective feedback that helps them to shape their content to meet the needs of their audience, advising on structure, tone, level and consistency. I recognise that not all authors have the same needs or expectations about what they would like to achieve and so the author-editor relationship is always tailored.

Katy was superb, in hindsight, as a first author it wasn't actually ready to be edited when I gave it to her - she was very patient. Her input was highly valuable in the developmental editing and I learnt a huge amount through that process. I completely underestimated just how much value a good editor ads - it's vastly, vastly improved as a result. Thank you Katy

Katy proved to be a fantastic editor on my project through her attention to detail and dedication to getting the work done on time. She got to grips with the concepts and the main thematic areas of the book very quickly and subsequently offered very useful suggestions, including ideas for an additional chapter, all of which are a hallmark of a dependable, experienced and professional editor. Katy was very helpful in taking the time to understand my editing needs. She asked very thoughtful questions before providing an estimate about where I was with the book, what my goals were and what I hoped to achieve with the edit. Her comments were very helpful and gave me a clear direction on the changes I needed to make.
