Read for Charity: What You Can Do This June

Read for Charity: What You Can Do This June

We all love reading challenges — but you know what’s even better than setting records and out-reading your friends? Reading to raise money for a great cause.

That’s why this June, Reedsy Discovery is partnering with Room to Read to raise money for child literacy and girls’ education. For every book review posted on Discovery in June, Reedsy will donate $5 to Room to Read — enough to cover the cost of five educational books used in their literacy programs!

For every book review posted on Discovery in June, @ReedsyHQ will donate $5 to @RoomtoRead. Will you join the challenge?

If you’re an avid reader — or someone who’s happy to pick up a book in order to help others — then this challenge is for you.

How to take part in the challenge, you ask? All you have to do is post a book review on Discovery during the month of June.

To post a review, find the book you’ve read on Discovery using the search bar at the top. Click on the “reader review” tab, then follow the steps to write a review. If the book isn't already on Discovery, you can add it to your bookshelf first.

Want to know more about Room to Read? They’re an established non-profit that’s operated in low-income communities across Asia and Africa over the past twenty years. Their literacy programs teach schoolchildren to read and help kids develop lasting reading habits.

Room to Read also has a girls’ education program, which helps teenage girls build the skills to succeed academically and negotiate for their own welfare — including the right to stay in school in the first place.

This isn’t the first time we’ve teamed up with Room to Read! Reedsy previously partnered with Room to Read for the 2017 #IWriteBecause campaign, for which writers submitted inspirational one-minute videos answering the simple question: why do you write?

For every submitted video, we donated $10 to Room to Read. We joined forces once more when Reedsy’s CEO Emmanuel Nataf cycled 320km from Paris to London with TechBikers, raising nearly £65k for international literacy.

But the best kind of activism is when we all get involved — that’s where you come in! If one of your goals is to read more this summer, why not join the June Reading Challenge? By posting your reviews on Discovery, you’ll be helping kids around the world discover the joy of reading too.

Want to help us spread the word? Share the reading challenge on Twitter and get your friends to join in! How much money can we raise together?

The June Reading Challenge ran from June 1st to June 30th, 2021. During the course of one month, the Discovery community published over 500 book reviews, and raised $2,800 for Room to Read.
